Don’t Give Up Your Ground: Protecting What God Has Given You

Have you ever lost something and thought, “Wait a minute. Where did that go?” Maybe it was your phone, your keys, or the last piece of chocolate you were saving. Suddenly, everyone in the house becomes a suspect. Funny enough, we can do something similar in our spiritual life. We can look around one day and wonder, “Where did my peace go?”

God has given His children an inheritance. That does not just mean something waiting for us in Heaven. God gives us things to walk in right now. He gives us peace, joy, purpose, identity, wisdom, hope, and authority through Jesus. These are part of our spiritual territory. And the enemy would love nothing more than to convince us to give them up.

Ephesians 6:11 tells us, “Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.” Notice the Bible says schemes. The enemy does not always walk through the front door wearing a name tag that says, “Hello, I am here to ruin your day.” Sometimes he slips in through fear, worry, anger, offense, comparison, temptation, or a lie that we keep thinking about.

Maybe God has given you peace, but then you spend three hours scrolling through bad news and arguing with strangers online. Before you know it, your peace has packed a suitcase. Maybe God has called you to do something, but the thought comes, “Who do you think you are?” If you believe that lie long enough, you may stop moving toward the very thing God asked you to do.

First Peter 5:8–9 tells us to stay alert because the enemy is looking for someone to devour. Then Scripture gives us an important command: resist him and stand firm in the faith. We are not told to panic. We are not told to hide under the covers with snacks. We are told to stand.

Think about Joshua. God told him, “Every place the sole of your foot will tread upon I have given to you” (Joshua 1:3). God had promised the land, but Joshua still had to walk into it. He had to trust God, obey Him, and refuse to turn back when things became difficult.

We need that same attitude today.

Maybe your territory is your home. Maybe it is your marriage, your calling, your peace, your thoughts, your children, or the work God has asked you to do. We should not allow fear, bitterness, temptation, or lies to move in and start rearranging the furniture.

Jesus has given us authority, but authority must be used. James 4:7 says, “Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” Notice the order. We submit to God first. We stay close to our Shepherd. Then we resist what does not belong.

Sometimes taking back territory is very practical. Turn off the thing feeding your fear. Forgive the person you keep replaying arguments with in your head. Open your Bible instead of letting social media preach to you all morning. Pray over your home. Speak God’s truth when your thoughts tell you something different. Take the step of obedience you have been putting off.

You do not have to chase the enemy around looking for a fight. Stay close to Jesus. Know God’s Word. Guard your heart. Watch your thoughts. Obey when God tells you to move.

And when the enemy whispers, “You should just give up,” you can answer with God’s truth.

This belongs to God. God gave me this ground. I am standing firm.

So today, ask yourself: Where have I been giving up ground? Maybe it is time to reclaim your peace. Maybe it is time to step back into your calling. Maybe it is time to stop agreeing with a lie.

Stay close to the Shepherd. Put on your armor. Stand firm.

The enemy does not get to set up camp on territory that belongs to God.
