Godly Marriage: What Does It Mean for the Man to Be the Head of the Household (Copy)

Marriage can be a touchy subject in today’s culture. Add the words, “The man is the head of the household,” and somebody somewhere just dropped their coffee.

But before we argue about it, we should ask a better question: What does the Bible actually mean?

First Corinthians 11:3 says, “The head of every man is Christ, the head of a wife is her husband, and the head of Christ is God.” Ephesians 5 also teaches about the relationship between a husband and wife. But biblical leadership may look very different from what people picture when they hear the word “head.”

Being the head of the household does not mean the husband gets a throne, a remote control, and the final piece of chicken because he is “the boss.”

Jesus showed us what godly leadership looks like.

Jesus led by serving. He protected people. He taught them. He cared for them. He washed His disciples’ feet. Most importantly, He gave His life for us.

That is the example husbands are given.

Ephesians 5:25 says, “Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her.”

Read that again.

God does not tell a husband, “Make sure everybody does what you say.” He tells him to love his wife the way Jesus loves His church.

That is a huge responsibility.

Biblical leadership is not about power. It is about responsibility. A godly husband should be willing to pray for his family, protect his family, serve his family, seek God for direction, and put the needs of his family before his own selfish wants.

But that does not make the wife less important.

Genesis 2:18 says God made woman as a helper suitable for man. The idea of a helper is not an insult. Scripture even uses the language of “help” for God Himself. A godly wife brings wisdom, strength, gifts, insight, encouragement, and abilities into the marriage.

She is not the household intern.

A husband and wife are a team.

That means a godly husband should listen to his wife. If she sees something he does not see, he should listen. If she has wisdom, he should value it. If she is better with money, planning, business, fixing the sink, or remembering where everyone left their shoes, there is no biblical rule saying he has to pretend he knows more.

Being the head does not mean being the best at everything.

It means accepting responsibility to lead in a way that looks like Jesus.

And biblical submission does not mean a woman must accept abuse, control, fear, humiliation, manipulation, or sinful behavior. A husband cannot use Scripture as a weapon to demand obedience while ignoring God's commands to love, honor, and sacrifice for his wife.

Jesus never gave husbands permission to become dictators.

In fact, just before Paul discusses husbands and wives, Ephesians 5:21 says believers should be “submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ.”

A healthy Christian marriage should have a lot of “us” in it.

How should we handle this?

What is God telling us?

How can we make this decision?

How can we serve Him together?

In today's culture, that might mean both spouses work. Maybe she makes more money. Maybe he cooks dinner while she handles the bills. Maybe she is better at organizing the family calendar while he would lose his own birthday if his phone did not remind him.

Those things do not decide who is spiritually leading.

Godly leadership is about character.

A godly husband says, “Follow me as I follow Jesus.”

A godly wife says, “I will walk beside you, encourage you, speak truth to you, and help us follow God.”

And both should be able to say, “Jesus is the true head of this home.”

That last part changes everything.

The husband is not supposed to lead according to his ego. The wife is not supposed to follow blindly. Both are following Christ.

Godly marriage is not a battle to see who gets control.

It is two people, with different strengths and responsibilities, walking in the same direction.

Jesus first. Husband and wife together. Same mission. One home.

And when both people are trying to look more like Jesus instead of trying to prove who is in charge, marriage starts looking a whole lot more like God designed it to look.
